Therefore, for a balanced view of life you will need unpleasant feelings just as you would need the pleasant ones. This will help you in making sense of life’s ‘good and bad’ experiences. Furthermore, she mentioned that without the negatives we could not evaluate our experiences. As a result, we cannot experience a true sense of satisfaction.

In a study he conducted with his colleague in 2011, he discovered that if one tried to suppress a negative thought before sleep he or she may end up dreaming about it more, a phenomenon referred to as dream rebound.

Furthermore, Eric L. Garland a psychotherapist at Florida State University and his associates did a study in a 2012 to measure stress response based on heart rate in 58 adults. In this study, participants also completed a measure of their tendency to suppress negative thoughts. Thereafter, these researchers discovered that suppressing negative thoughts and feelings could be harmful.

How to identify negative sources

Negativity can come from within an individual (thoughts, feelings, and emotions) or from one’s surroundings such as at the workplace, family or other life issues. You need to identify these sources because too much negativity may also have detrimental effects on your health.

Furthermore, positivity will greatly reduce your chances of developing common colds. In addition, positivity will improve better psychological as well as physical well-being and help you have better-coping skills during hardships and times of stress.
